He was also Duke of Lower Lorraine as Godfried VII. Godfried succeeded his father at a very young age (hence the nickname: "dux in cunis", the duke in the cradle), under the regency of his mother Lutgardis of Sulzbach. For the Berthout family (an old knight family), this was reason to seek more independence (Grimbergen wars). In 1147 Godfried was present in Aachen at the coronation of Hendrik Berengarius as co-king of Germany. In 1153 he visited the imperial court. Godfried married Margaretha van Limburg to end the long-standing conflict of his father and grandfather with the house of Limburg. In 1159 he had the Motte (castle) of Grimbergen burned down and ended a period of 20 years of revolt by the house Berthout. He acquired the custody of Tongerlo and the counties of Aarschot (before 1179), Jodoigne (1184) and Duras (1189). At the national level, Godfried emperor Frederick I of Hohenstaufen supported with troops for his Italian campaigns. Furthermore, he was mainly concerned with strengthening his role as Duke of Lower Lorraine. In 1166 he supported the Flemish expedition against Floris III of Holland. who had infringed Flemish rights. In 1172, however, he had to defeat a sensitive defeat against Boudewijn V of Henegouwen. Godfried promoted the development of cities and gave city rights to 's-Hertogenbosch. Godfried visited Jerusalem from 1182 to 1184. He distinguished himself against Saladin in defending the city.
